Working at Height: How to Reduce Risk Before, During and After the Job

Falls from height remain the most common type of fatal workplace accident in Great Britain. While the risks are widely understood, incidents can still occur when the planning, people, equipment and controls surrounding the work do not come together as intended.

In this practical webinar, Richard Bladon CFIOSH will explain how organisations can reduce work-at-height risk before, during and after the job. He will explore what effective planning looks like, how the hierarchy of control should influence decisions and why completing a risk assessment should be treated as the beginning of the process rather than the final step.

Richard will examine the wider factors that determine whether work can be completed safely, including competence, control, equipment selection and inspection, communication, supervision, rescue planning and changing site conditions. He will also consider what should happen after the work, including how inspections, near misses, incidents and corrective actions can improve future assessments and working methods.

The session will demonstrate how risks and controls can develop throughout the life of a job. Attendees will learn how to:

• Apply the avoid, prevent and minimise hierarchy to real working situations.
• Strengthen planning before work begins.
• Recognise changes that should cause work to stop and controls to be reviewed.
• Improve the management of competence, contractors, equipment and rescue arrangements.
• Connect site checks, inspections, incidents and corrective actions with future planning.
