This presentation explores the advanced capabilities of multi-sensor fire detectors and their critical role in enhancing fire safety.

A key advantage of multi-sensor technology is its ability to reduce false alarms, particularly those caused by non-fire stimuli like vaping, aerosols, steam, and stage smoke. Research by BRE and the FIA has shown that multi-sensors can reduce false alarms by up to 69%, making them a cost-effective and reliable solution for settings prone to nuisance triggers, such as theatres, accommodation blocks, and educational institutions. Features like transient rejection and drift compensation further enhance their performance in challenging conditions.

Testing and maintaining multi-sensor detectors requires careful attention to standards and best practices. Depending on the model and configuration, detectors may need to be tested sequentially—activating each sensor individually—or simultaneously, using tools that can apply combined stimuli. Standards such as BS 5839:1 emphasize the importance of using real stimuli and verifying that each sensor responds appropriately. Proper documentation, technician training, and access to system configurations are essential to ensure compliance and effectiveness.

Ultimately, multi-sensor detectors represent a smarter approach to fire protection by combining multiple sensing technologies to improve detection accuracy and reduce unwanted alarms. Their adaptability, compliance with modern standards, and proven effectiveness in real-world applications make them a valuable asset in modern fire safety systems.
